Notice the cool pink stripes in the icing? Pretty fancy, huh? Actually it’s a piece of cake (pun intended) to do. Here’s what you’ll need:
- pastry bag
- coupler and tip(s) of your choice
- paste food coloring of your choice
- clean paintbrush
- icing (duh)
Begin by putting the coupler and the tip in/on the pastry bag and folding the opening down.
Dip the paintbrush in the paste food coloring you selected.
Keep in mind that many pastry bags (especially featherweight ones) permanently stain with pink or red food coloring. Once it’s washed it won’t affect your icing at all, you’ll just have a pink-ish bag.
“Paint” a stripe or two or more of food coloring up the inside of the bag. For a rainbow effect, you could do rainbow colors!
Carefully fill the bag with icing. I put it over a tall glass first–this makes it easier to fill.
Pipe and you’re finished. This also works great when making a rose–it adds an accent to each “petal.”
