In you’re not yet in the loop, Young Living announced yesterday that it was introducing a new line of essential oils dubbed Vitality. Vitality essential oils come in regular bottles wrapped in white labels with lovely, colorful titles. The purpose behind the Vitality oils? A white label means that they are safe for proper internal usage.
Now, that said, the oils aren’t really new. The labels are, yes, but in reality, these are oils that Young Living was already selling. What’s setting them apart is that these ones are labeled for internal usage whereas the regular essential oils are labeled for aromatic and topical usage. If you’re wondering, that means that, yes, they are the exact same oils. For example, Lemon Vitality essential oil is exactly the same as regular Lemon essential oil. But, because of FDA’s regulations on essential oils, they must be marked separately.
To illustrate this, let’s take coconut oil as a comparison. I watched Sarah Adamo’s Periscope video (embedded below) yesterday and she did a great job of clarifying by comparing Young Living’s essential oils to coconut oil, so let me recap what she said.
In a typical grocery store or health food store, there is coconut oil down the baking aisle that is marketed for food usage. Then, when you go down the supplement aisle, there is more coconut oil (often by the same company) that is labeled for topical usage. What’s the difference? Absolutely nothing except the label. The coconut oil from the baking aisle that is used in cooking and smoothies is the exact same coconut oil from the supplement section that is used for topical things such as a moisturizer. But because the FDA has separate categories for topical and internal usage, they must be labeled separately.
Young Living’s essential oils are the same. Vitality is labeled for internal usage and the regular oils for topical and aromatic usage. But the oils of the same kind are equal in every way–they come from the same farms, from the same plants, are bottled the same way, and so on. The only difference is the label.
What’s in the Vitality Line?
Great question! Let me introduce you to the 27 oils that have thus far been added to the Vitality line (I’m sure more will be added later).

I LOVE those labels! Their sooo cute!
Erika says
thank you for clarifying this, TJ!
Jessica says
Thank you so much! If only all up lines could have explained it in this manner!
Marian Miller says
But, I thought that most of the regular YL essential oils were already digestible?!
TJ says
Hi, Marian. Yes, that was the reason why I wrote this post. Legally, Young Living can’t state that their essential oils are for ingestion and aromatic/topical usage on the same label. Which is why they came out with the Vitality line. That said, it is still the exact same oil.
Aisha Crawford says
Thank you so much for clarifying this! As you mentioned their direct site has to answer with “follow label and directions”. I just wanted to know if I could diffuse and make cleaners with my theives vitality. I know that is how they have to answer but it was driving me bonkers lol. So glad to know since I don’t ingest it nearly as often as I make cleaning products with it and diffuse it. So glad to know that I’m not doing something wrong with it! I kept thinking these ingredients are identical! Why are they different? It makes perfect sense with the way you explained it!
TJ says
Glad it helped. Have a great day, Aisha! 😀
Richele says
If they are the exact same oil, why is the Vitality line cheaper?
Danielle Moore says
The Vitality ones are 5 ML and the others are 15ML.
Kristen says
So if u ingest the regular oil for (example the orange oil)it’s ok though right ? It doesn’t have to the vitality !!!
Lilly says
Nice informative post! I went through the line and noticed the price for the vitality line is actually more expensive for the same oil. It seems that the oils used for aromatics are in 15ml quantities vs the vitality oils which are in 5ml quantities making them look less expensive. One example I will use is Frankincense. The Frankincense oil that is marked for aromatic and topical use is $96.71/15ml bottle (retail price) and Frankincense Vitality is $39.14/5ml bottle (retail price). If you multiply the Frankincense Vitality cost to 15ml it comes out to $117.42 for the same exact oil only labeled for ingestion! Why is there a cost difference within the same company for the same oil? I would love your feedback!
TJ says
Hi, Lilly. Good eye! They upped the price a bit. That’s odd–I have no idea why. I’m going to email their customer service to ask why! There shouldn’t be any difference in price and when they first came out there wasn’t.
TJ says
Hi again, Lilly. I asked my upline and they had a super fast answer. 🙂 They’ve made the 5 ml bottles more expensive for the same reason that most 5 ml bottles are a bit more expensive. It costs more for the bottle and different size label. They must’ve had a special when they first came out and that’s why they were the same price at first.
Kim says
Thank you for all of the information. I, too, noticed the difference in prices and as long as I know the oils are the same, I will continue to buy the 15 ml oils for the lesser price.
Leah says
I’m brand new to oils, but so glad I found this post. I was concerned because in my starter kit, I have 5 Vitality oils, and I thought for a moment I wouldn’t be able to use them in any other way besides ingesting them. There are some I want to diffuse, use in sprays, use topically, and with what you are saying, this is fine to do, right? Thanks!
TJ says
Yep, they’re the same stuff. 🙂
Miriam Winkler says
Why are the vitality oils in 5 ml bottles and not 15 ml bottles if all that was done to the product was to change the labels?
TJ says
Probably because people who understand they’re the same thing don’t buy the Vitality oils as often and therefore they put them in the smaller bottles to avoid wasting product.
Christine says
There is NO WAY smaller sized bottles and labels come out to be THAT much of a price difference. Young living is seriously ripping people off.
TJ says
Hi, Christine! I’m sorry you feel that way. It is no different than buying batteries at Sam’s Club vs. Walmart {owned by the same company, same batteries, different quantities}. Anytime you can buy a larger quantity it’s going to be cheaper because it’s cheaper for the company. Fewer labels (in YL’S case by 3), fewer bottles. Less inventory space. The list goes on. It’s the same stuff in the bottle, so buy the bigger bottle when available. Meanwhile they are trying to keep the feds off their back with labeling issues.
Sue says
There may have been a cost from the FDA to begin the line, copyrighting the new labels, paying for the design for the new labels, etc.; that all begins to add up.
Mikaila says
So you can use the vitality oils in a diffuser?
TJ says
Sure.
Yadira Laguerre says
This cleared up so much for me – thank you! I’m glad I read through the comments because I didn’t realize the Vitality were 5ml, I just thought they were cheaper.
Victoria (Vicki) Otremba-Mattox says
Thank you so so much! I really thought there was a difference in quality only by vitality not as strong as essential oil so it was used for baking, eating, drinking and the essential oils for defusing and use for bodies. There have been times when product 15ml was out but I didn’t know I could use 5ml vitality that I had. I thank you so much you have saved me a lot of money and understanding. I have been a member of yl since June 2016. I want to make DIY products for Christmas. Thank you, Vicki
Yvonne Carpenter says
Well HALLELUYER TJ!!! I was so confused! All of my oils have original labels, and I was afraid to use them for consumption. I’m headed to the kitchen right now, to make some much needed tea! Thank you so very much for this post! God Bless, Yvonne.
Karen in SC says
Thank you FDA for over regulating the essential oil industry and costing us consumers more just to protect us from something we have known is entirely safe for many years. And that’s just what regulations are all about! I’m glad you cleared up my confusion, too, with the difference in regular vs. Vitality oils! I’ve been using them for 4 years now, and somehow I missed out on the memo that said they were exactly the same! Hmmm…maybe there wasn’t a memo? I love my oils, and that’s a FACT!!!
Angie Ratliff says
Thank you for clarifying this.
Sara says
Thank you so much for the clarification! On the YL blog the responses are so standard, with read the label etc. This post was so helpful, thank you, I’m glad I found you!
Melissa says
I am recently seeing a website that’s not young living making these claims using the vitality brand, and selling them for $7 ea. How can they do this?
This can’t be legit.
TJ says
Yep, that’d be a scam. Lot of them out there unfortunately.
Jan says
I’ve been using Copaiba Vitality but want to purchase in a larger size. It is the only oil that helps me sleep. So, you’re telling me if I buy Copaiba Essential Oil in the 15ml size I’m getting the exact same oil as the Copaiba Vitality?
TJ says
Yes.
Michelle says
How do you use copiaba to sleep? What are the BEST oils for sleep? Insomnia x5 years now 🙁
Shawna says
Thank you so much for clearing this up. I also was wondering if it was safe to diffuse the vitality line, since I personally do not ingest the oils as of yet. Since the vitality often comes free in my Essential Rewards, and in the kits as well, it is great that they can be diffused as well!
Alton Bagares says
Is there an regular essential oils that is for external use only? I haven’t reviewed yet if all regular essential oil have corresponding Vitality blends.
Linda says
So I I run out of Thieves Vitality which I use in my tea, I can ingest the regular oil too? Correct?
Stephanie says
This has been so helpful! Thank you for the calrification!!
Michele says
Wow! Thanks so much for spreading the word. This will definitely make a difference in my next order!
Nat says
Thank you for the explanation, in the catalog the price is also different, so you know why?
Elnath Maldonado says
I totally understand your explanation, but why the vitality line is way cheaper than the other one? In the catalog shows it like this
Lisa says
I guess I don’t understand. If they’re the same oils as before, then why does my regular tangerine bottle say for external use only?
Natalie says
Is there an official document where I can show people the vitality line has bend approved my the FDA?
Thanks!
Tracy says
Where are these products manufactured?
