With yesterday being Independence Day and all, I wanted to do something special and tasty for the guests that we had over to our house to celebrate. So I decided to make some ice cream that I didn’t think anyone had ever tried before–Maple Bacon ice cream to be specific.
I had made this delectable treat once before, but, at that time, I had merely cooked the bacon crumbles then mixed them into the ice cream. This made the ice cream awesome straight from the ice cream maker, but after a day or two in the freezer, the moisture from the ice cream absorbed into the bacon. This made the bacon reject its former crunchy texture and adopt a, well, kinda soggy and unpleasant {though oddly still delicious} one.
This would not do for me. It was not a perfected recipe or method for that matter. So I decided to try candying the bacon first. I was able to cover it with a super simple maple syrup candy coating, so it remained healthy and was still made with real food. And this seems to have done the trick! The bacon crumbles are now not only retaining their crunchiness, but they even taste a little better!
Now, you may be wondering: what does this ice cream taste like? Well, to use the example my friend Caleb gave when trying it yesterday, it tastes kinda like a pancake in ice cream form. It possesses that sweet, familiar maple syrup flavor that we’re all familiar with atop of pancakes. Then the bacon adds morsels of smoky, salty goodness with a pleasant crunch.
This Maple Bacon Ice Cream is, of course, super awesome all by itself, but if toppings are your forte, a drizzle of chocolate syrup {might I recommend my homemade Cocoa Syrup} over the top does taste pretty good.

Eggs, milk, maple syrup, and bacon are technically parts of a good breakfast, so this ice cream can count as a breakfast dish, right? 😉 It looks amazing!
